Severe Storms Cross Area Yesterday
Posted 3 July 2008
Hail and strong winds were reported yesterday, Wednesday, July 2, following a round of severe weather that traveled through Benton, Linn, Jones and Jackson counties.

Pea-sized hail and heavy rains crossed the area. The National Weather Service said nickel-sized hail was reported in Jackson County.

Radar indicated central Linn and northern Jones County, specifically a line from Whittier to Anamosa, received about 1.5 inches of rain in just over an hour's time yesterday afternoon. The localized downpour caused flash flooding that covered some roads in Anamosa.

The cold front was responsible for the outbreak of a line of severe storms that crossed Eastern Iowa and spawned what officials believe was a tornado just west of Van Horne in Benton County. No one was injured there, but several farm buildings and grains bins were destroyed.
