Linn County Jail To Reopen Soon
Posted 10 March 2009
The Linn County Jail is expected to re-open this spring.
The Correctional Center has been undergoing an approximately one
million dollar renovation project following last June's flooding in
Cedar Rapids.
The jail, which is located on May's Island, was filled with about five
feet of water. Rooms with major mechanical and electronic equipment
like video surveillance and heating and cooling controls are being
moved to higher floors.
Even though some of the cells won't be renovated until the second phase
of the project later this year, inmates could start moving back in by
mid-April. The jail can house a little over four hundred inmates.
Most of Linn County's inmates have been staying at the Anamosa State
Penitentiary in Anamosa since the flood, and some have also been sent
to the Jones County Jail, Oakdale and the Lary Nelson Center.
